2 die as Cyclone Remal ravages parts of Bengal, heavy rain to continue

According to the media reports, As heavy rain and gusty winds persist in Kolkata following the landfall of severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal,’ efforts are underway to mitigate its impact. At least two people lost their lives in West Bengal as Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc across the state and neighbouring Bangladesh, with wind speeds reaching up to 135 km per hour, PTI reported, citing officials.

As per the information, The Kolkata Municipality team and Kolkata Police Disaster Management team are actively involved in clearing uprooted trees, particularly in the Alipore area of the city. Late-night visuals depicted workers diligently striving to clear roads amidst ongoing rainfall.  Flight services at the Kolkata airport resumed on Monday morning after being suspended for 21 hours due to Cyclone Remal. Airport sources, however, said it would take some more time for the situation to become normal. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed a total of 14 teams in the state. These teams are on standby to assist in rescue and relief operations.

As per the reports, The Meteorological office announced that ‘Remal’ had weakened into a cyclonic storm by 5:30 am on Monday, situated approximately 70 km northeast of Canning and 30 km west-southwest of Mongla. The system is anticipated to continue weakening gradually. As a precautionary measure, West Bengal evacuated over 1 lakh people from vulnerable areas of the state to safety.
