At the U23 Asian wrestling championships 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia won a bronze medal by defeating Maksat Satybaldy in the 86 kg freestyle weight category. Despite a win, it was an unimpressive result from him as the Indian contingent was expecting a better outing from the world championships silver medallist in the tournament. The 23-year-old Punia was defeated by eventual gold medalists Azizbek Fayzullaev of Uzbekistan and Nurtilek Karypbaev of Kyrgyzstan in the first two rounds. However, he overpowered Satybaldy of Kazakhstan to settle for the bronze. India took home 25 medals overall, including 10 gold medals, in the U23 competition.
