According to media sources, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed happiness and joy as the Union Cabinet has approved to confer the status of classical language to Marathi. In a tweet, Mr. Shinde said a long battle has been won. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union cabinet for the decision.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too has expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the union cabinet. Terming it a historic day for Marathi language, Mr. Fadnavis said a proposal in this regard was sent when he was the Chief Minister in 2013 and was constantly followed up by Mr. Eknath Shinde, the incumbent CM. He added that the state had cited epics like Leela Charitra, Dnyaneshwari, and Vivek Sindhu to prove that Marathi is indeed a classical language. Thanking all experts and scholars for their help, Mr. Fadnavis said the glory would not have been possible without their inputs.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, termed the decision an important and historic one. Mr. Gadkari further expressed his commitment towards the overall development and promotion of Marathi.
