India, UK Agree To Resume Free Trade Negotiations

According to Media Sources, India and the UK today agreed to resume free trade negotiations between the two countries. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said this while addressing the joint press conference along with the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds in New Delhi. Mr Goyal mentioned that this is an outcome of discussions held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Sir Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. He said that the talks on FTA were stalled due to elections in the UK. He highlighted that the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK is going to be a forward-looking, equitable, balanced, transparent and mutually beneficial agreement which will benefit both countries.

As Per Media Sources, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reaffirmed the collective commitment to meet the aspirations of the people and businesses of both countries. He underscored that the government will be able to make rapid progress to meet the collective aspirations for trade, investment and mutual prosperity for the people of both countries. He said the strengthening of the trade relationship between the two countries has the potential to unlock opportunities for business and consumers across both nations. The two leaders directed the negotiators to work together to resolve the outstanding issues in the agreement to ensure a fair and equitable trade deal for shared success.
