According to media sources, India’s major ports have registered remarkable growth in cargo handling in the last financial year. In a statement, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said that the country’s ports handled 819 million tonnes of cargo in the financial year 2023-24, which increased to 855 million tonnes in FY 2024-25, marking an annual growth of 4.3 per cent. It was further mentioned that the increase in traffic was driven by a 10 per cent rise in container throughput and a 13 per cent increase in fertiliser cargo handling, compared to the previous fiscal year. Expressing happiness over this achievement, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, said that the ministry’s consistent efforts to modernise port infrastructure, enhance operational efficiency, and encourage private sector participation have paved the way for unprecedented growth in the country’s maritime sector.
