According to media sources, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has said that the Emergency was a dark period in the history of the country, and lakhs of people suffered due to it. Addressing a programme in New Delhi, Mr Gadkari said, there was widespread barbarism and atrocities during the period of the Emergency. He said, after Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister following the 1971 elections, a movement against corruption was launched under the leadership of Jai Prakash Narayan. Several political parties and organisations opposed to the Congress ideology supported this movement, and its epicentre was Bihar.

In his address, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said the fight against the emergency succeeded because of the able guidance and leadership of those who spearheaded it. He said, the then Indira Gandhi government imposed it using the provisions of the Constitution because she had lost on three fronts, the judiciary, political and public. We spoke to former Member of Parliament Rajendra Agrawal, who was imprisoned under MISA during the emergency.
