Uttarakhand: Relief & rescue operations on war footing; around 190 people rescued so far

According to media sources, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today said that around 190 people have been rescued from disaster-hit Dharali village of Uttarkashi district after a devastating cloudburst yesterday triggered massive flash floods over Kheer ganga river in the region. Talking to media, the Chief Minister assured both the Centre and the state government are fully committed to assisting the victims. Mr Dhami met with the affected people the disaster-hit region and inquired about their well-being. He assured all possible assistance to them and reviewed the progress of the relief efforts. Mr. Dhami also met with the personnel deployed on-site for relief and rescue work.
The Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also promised to extend all possible help. The Chief Minister further noted that road connectivity in several areas has been severely disrupted due to landslides.
Relief and rescue operations are in full swing in the district with the Army, NDRF, SDRF, District Administration, and other teams continuously engaged in the efforts.
The Chief Minister said, the state government’s top priority is to ensure that relief reaches every affected person and that normalcy is restored as soon as possible. He directed the administration to ensure that no affected family is left without assistance.
Earlier in the day, Mr Dhami conducted an aerial survey of the disaster-affected areas.
To accelerate the relief efforts, two helicopters have been deployed to transport essential food supplies and relief materials to the Dharali region. In addition, heavy machinery is being delivered by the Indian Air Force’s Chinook helicopters to facilitate road repairs, debris removal, and other necessary tasks swiftly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Dhami over the phone on the ongoing relief efforts and assured all possible assistance from the central government.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army has said that one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and 8 Jawans are still missing after the devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi. The Army said that a swift and coordinated Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operation is underway. Over 225 Army personnel, including infantry and engineering teams have been deployed for search, rescue, and relief operation. The Army said, combat engineers have also reached Dharali to aid in clearing debris and restoring mobility. It said that the Military helipad at Harsil is also operational and three civil helicopters have successfully landed at Bhatwari and Harsil for casualty evacuation and relief material delivery. The Army said that key road stretches near Bartwari, Linchigad, and Gangrani have been washed away, severely affecting movement. The civil helipad at Dharali remains non-functional due to a mudslide.
