According to media sources, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that literacy is a means to dignity, empowerment and self-reliance. Mr Pradhan said this while virtually addressing the International Literacy Day celebrations in New Delhi today. Highlighting India’s progress and vision for universal literacy, the Minister said that India’s literacy rate has risen from seventy-four per cent in 2011 to about eighty-one per cent in 2023-24. Underscoring that literacy goes beyond reading and writing, Mr Pradhan also emphasised that true progress will be achieved only when literacy becomes a lived reality for every citizen. The Minister also urged youth and students to contribute to the literacy mission, suggesting such efforts be integrated with academic credits.
On the occasion, Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary has said that India’s Digital Public Infrastructure is exemplary for the rest of the world, especially the Global South. The Minister said that the impact of literacy is huge and cannot be measured in numbers. Highlighting the importance of literacy for every individual, Mr Chaudhary added that one must break the cycle of ignorance and make efforts to attain literacy, irrespective of their age and class. Calling the Understanding of Lifelong learning for all in Society (ULLAS) initiative transformative, the Minister said that India has generated significant digital assets to boost its public infrastructure, which will go a long way to strengthen its vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Mr Chaudhary informed that Himachal Pradesh today became the fifth state, apart from Ladakh, Mizoram, Goa and Tripura, to achieve full literacy.
