According to media sources, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has emphasised the integration of Artificial Intelligence, drones, and automated response mechanisms into the country’s maritime security framework. Addressing the inaugural session of the 42nd India Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi today, Mr Singh said that ICG must continuously adapt, upgrading its training and equipment to guard against threats like cyber and electronic warfare. Mr Singh underlined that automated surveillance networks and AI-enabled systems are essential to reduce response times to seconds and ensure readiness at all times.
He highlighted that instability in neighbouring countries often spills into the maritime domain. Mr Singh cited frequent developments in Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other regional nations that impact coastal security, especially in the Bay of Bengal, through refugee influx, illegal migration, and irregular maritime activities. He urged the ICG to maintain not just routine surveillance but also geopolitical awareness and readiness to respond swiftly to external developments.
Mr Singh also highlighted that women officers today serve as frontline warriors, being trained and deployed in various fields. He said this transformation reflects the government’s vision of inclusive participation, where women contribute equally in leadership and operational capacities.
The Minister further lauded the Coast Guard’s crucial role in addressing maritime security threats and managing disaster situations. He said the Coast Guard consistently serves as the first line of response. He emphasised that the Coast Guard plays a vital role in ensuring both internal and external security.
The three-day Conference that will conclude tomorrow has brought together the service’s senior leadership to deliberate on strategic, operational, and administrative priorities in the backdrop of evolving maritime security challenges and the growing strategic significance of the Indian Ocean Region.
