According to Media Sources, The Australian government has announced a gun buyback scheme following, the country’s deadliest mass shooting in decades. It is the largest buyback since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre. The Bondi Beach attack is country’s deadliest mass attack in decades, left 15 dead and dozens injured when two gunmen, inspired by Islamic State ideology, opened fire at a Jewish festival. The attack has been declared a terrorist incident. It was committed by a father-son duo. Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist act. while his father, Sajid, was killed during the attack.
As Per Media Sources, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett highlighted that Australia now has over four million firearms and that the buyback will target surplus, newly banned, and illegal guns. The scheme, funded 50-50 by federal and state governments, will also include limits on individual gun ownership, stricter licensing, and Australian citizenship as a condition for firearm permits. Work on a national firearms register and improved access to criminal intelligence will be accelerated.
