Bengaluru: 7 leopard cubs dead at Bannerghatta Biological Park due to feline panleukopenia virus

According to media source,Seven leopard cubs have succumbed to feline panleukopenia at Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Biological Park, officials of the national park said on Monday. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), feline panleukopenia (FP) is a highly contagious viral disease of cats caused by the feline parvovirus. Kittens are most severely affected by the virus.

As per media reports, Amid increased surveillance against Nipah virus, Karnataka has seen an outbreak of Feline panleukopenia (FP) among cats. While several domestic cats have succumbed to the infection in the past month, seven leopard cubs have died in a span of 10 days at Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP). With the threat of infection among wild cats looming large over Karnataka, the forest department has convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to review the situation at BBP and in other parts of the state.
According to media source,Sources at Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Bengaluru confirmed the outbreak of the FP virus among domestic cats over the past few months. “There have been reports of large-scale deaths of cats in several places. FP is a highly contagious viral infection among cats caused by feline parvovirus. Among domesticated cats, kittens are susceptible to it. Among wild cats, it is largely cubs that get infected. The mortality rate among the young ones is 80% and adults 30-40%,” explained a senior veterinarian.
