Today, in Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said “BJP has been consistent in its support for women’s reservation. BJP held its national convention in 1994 in Vadodara and there we stated that we stand for reservation for the women in the Parliament and also in the state assemblies. In 1998, BJP reiterated its commitment to women’s reservation by introducing it in the Lok Sabha under then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.”
FM Sitharaman said “In 2007, the BJP national executive approved 33% reservation for all organisational positions within the party & in 2008, BJP provided 33% reservation to women in its cadre post as well. I am a beneficiary of this reservation for women and, with all humility, I want to thank my party for having given me that opportunity.”
She also said “For empowering women there cannot be more a substantial measure than finding them in the Armed Forces.
– All wings of the Indian Armed Forces now have women in combat roles.
– In 2016, the Modi Govt decided to reserve 33% posts at the constable level for women in CRPF and CISF & 14-15% posts at the constable level in the border guarding forces have been brought in a phased manner.
– Girl cadets are now getting admitted in all existing 33 Sainik Schools.
– The Indian Army has opened entry for women candidates in the National Defence Academy (NDA).
– Permanent Commission (PC) is being granted to Women Officers in the Armed Forces.
– Similarly, the Indian Army has also opened avenues for Women Officers to serve as pilots in the Corps of Army Aviation.
– Women Officers are also being considered for Colonel Ranks and are being given command appointments.
So, whether it is the Navy, Army or Air Force, women are being treated equally as men.”
