According to media sources, The Union Health Ministry and the Delhi Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in the National Capital. This flagship scheme provides comprehensive health coverage of 5 lakh rupees per family per year across the country. However, the Delhi government will contribute an additional 5 lakh rupees, raising the total benefit to 10 lakh rupees per family annually.
During the event, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda stated that over 6,50,000 eligible families in the national capital would benefit from the scheme. He also mentioned that the average share of health treatment expenses, which was 62 percent in 2014, has now decreased to 38 percent. Mr Nadda emphasised that the scheme is not just an ordinary health insurance plan but an assurance scheme.
Addressing the gathering, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that the residents of the national capital can avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme at more than 30 thousand empanelled hospitals across the country. She announced that the distribution of cards will begin on the 10th of this month. Additionally, she stated that the government has allocated over two thousand one hundred crore rupees for the scheme.
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is the largest health assurance scheme in the world which aims at providing a health cover of 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. The scheme covers over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families, approximately 55 crore beneficiaries that form the bottom 40 percent of the nation’s population.
