According to media sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that the northeastern states will reach new heights of development through the efforts of his government. Speaking at the Jhumoir Binandini programme in Guwahati, Assam this evening, he stated that there was a time when the development of Assam and the Northeast was neglected, and the region’s culture was overlooked. He said that now he himself has become the brand ambassador of the Northeast’s culture.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the development of the tea industry and its workers will drive the overall growth of Assam and elevate the Northeast to new heights. He extended his advance thanks to all the participants for their upcoming performance and wished them well. Mr Modi said the Assam government has opened more than 350 Ayushman Mandirs for the better health of tea garden workers. He acknowledged Assam’s deep-rooted connection with tea and referenced his own past as a seller of the beverage. Speaking at the event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that today is a moment of great fortune for the state, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Assam for the first time after taking the oath as Prime Minister for the third time.
Mr. Modi also witnessed a grand Jhumoir dance performance, featuring nearly 8,000 dancers and drummers. The event, organised by the Assam government at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, marked 200 years of Assam’s tea industry and celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the tea tribe community. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and heads of missions from around 60 countries also attended the ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ programme, showcasing the northeastern state’s vibrant traditions to a global audience. Jhumoir is a folk dance of the Assam Tea Tribe and Adivasi Communities that embodies the spirit of inclusivity, unity and cultural pride, and symbolises Assam’s syncretic cultural melange. Earlier, the Prime Minister held a road in Guwahati. The Prime Minister has welcomed the Assam CM at the airport as he landed in Guwahati. Mr. Modi is two-day visit to the state and will inaugurate the Advantage Assam 2.0 tomorrow.
