According to media sources, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today asserted that Jammu and Kashmir will be free of terrorism under Narendra Modi government. Replying to the discussion in Rajya Sabha on India’s strong, successful and decisive Operation Sindoor in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Home Minister said strong action will be taken against terrorists and terror infrastructure will be razed to the ground.
Mr Shah lauded the role of Armed Forces and security agencies for the successful Operation Mahadev in which three terrorists involved in Pahalgam terror attack were neutralised. He pointed out that the government took stringent measures against Pakistan immediately after the terror attack, including suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and visa facility. He added that armed forces were given full operational freedom to destroy the terror hideouts in PoK and Pakistan. He said over a hundred terrorists were neutralised and terror camps of terrorist organizations were destroyed in Operation Sindoor. The Home Minister said that Pakistan’s striking capabilities were destroyed during Operation Sindoor and it was brought to its knees. He said the Pakistani side approached India and pleaded with the Indian side to stop the Operation.
He accused Congress for taking a lenient approach towards terrorism for its vote bank and appeasement politics. Mr Shah criticised former Home Minister P Chidambaram for seeking proof that the terrorists were from Pakistan. He accused that Mr. Chidambaram’s statement reflects the mindset of the Congress party which shields terror outfits.
During the Home Minister’s reply, the Opposition staged a walkout demanding the Prime Minister’s reply on Operation Sindoor.
Earlier, participating in the discussion, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar refuted mediation claims to stop Operation Sindoor saying that no phone call was made between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump from 22nd April to 16th June of this year. He said, no world leader asked India to stop its operation. He said, during the talk with the Vice President of America, India made its stand clear that if Pakistan attacks, India will respond by launching a big attack.
Highlighting the success of Operation Sindoor, the Minister said, the biggest terrorist centres in Pakistan like Bahawalpur and Muridke suffered heavy damage. He said, destruction of Pakistani airfields and videos of funerals of terrorists in Pakistan speak about the success of Operation Sindoor. He lauded the performance and capabilities of the armed forces which made the country proud. He said, the intention behind the Pahalgam terror attack is to destroy the economy of Jammu and Kashmir which returned to normalcy and prosperity after the abrogation of article 370.
The Minister said, after the attack, the first decision taken during Cabinet Committee on Security was to keep the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance until Pakistan irrevocably gives up its support to terrorism. Dr Jaishankar said, the people were told for 60 years that Jawaharlal Nehru’s mistake cannot be corrected but the Narendra Modi government showed that it can be corrected. He said, India has faced cross-border terrorism since 1947, and blood and water will not flow together. Dr Jaishankar said, India has been able to put terrorism issue on the global agenda on several global platforms in the last decade. He said, The Resistance Front (TRF), which was behind the terror attack in Pahalgam, was declared a terror outfit by the US. He said, India gave a strong message that it is not open for any kind of mediation and it will not accept nuclear blackmail.
Participating in the discussion, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha JP Nadda condemned the Pahalgam terror attack. He pointed out that Home Minister Amit Shah had rushed to Srinagar on the day of the terror attack and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had cut short his trip to Saudi Arabia. He highlighted that this shows how sensitive the government is. Mr Nadda lauded the role of armed forces and security agencies. He stressed that political leadership is of utmost importance. He alleged that during UPA rule, terror incidents were taking place along with trade with the neighbouring country. Mr Nadda emphasised that the NDA government has been dealing with terror with a tough hand.
NR Elango of DMK said that terrorism in any form shall not be allowed. He said, the sovereignty of India should not be intruded by any country in any manner and if anybody does so they must be taught a lesson.
Dola Sen of TMC raised the issue of intelligence failure saying that Baisaran valley was not fully secured. Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha of TDP lauded the Operation Sindoor saying that India acted in swift, precise and calibrated manner under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the operation was aimed at neutralizing the key terror infrastructure.
Manoj Jha of RJD also said national security is not a sloganeering but it is a moral duty and responsibility. Dr K Laxaman of BJP lauded the defence technologies used by the country in neutralizing the Pakistani attack during the Operation Sindoor. He said, Modi government has taken a series of steps to strengthen the defence ecosystem.
Akhilesh Prasad Singh of Congress accused that Indian diplomacy failed miserably during the Operation Sindoor. Niranjan Bishi of BJD said, India is the mother of democracy but Pakistan is the mother of terrorist. He said, Operation Sindoor showed the largest military might of the country’s armed forces.
Jaya Bachchan of Samajwadi Party paid condolences to those families who lost their loved ones during the Pahalgam attack. Dr John Brittas of CPI(M) said diplomatic political solutions should be pursued apart from military solutions. He said war jingoism will not serve the nation.
Sasmit Patra of BJD questioned if India has formally engaged with the US administration to seek clarity on why the US President continues to make public references to a ceasefire in which neither him nor his administration played any active role. Upendra Kushwaha of RLM saluted the armed forces for the valour shown during Operation Sindoor. He also paid tributes to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. Satnam Singh Sandhu of BJP, Dr Fauzia Khan of NCP-SCP, Renuka Chowdhury of Congress, TMC’s Sushmita Deb and Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena – UBT also participated in the discussion.
