According to the media sources, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Astana, Kazakhstan, on the sidelines of the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and pressed for the “safe and expeditious return” of Indian nationals stuck in the war zone. Several Indians were lured to Russia on the pretext of getting good jobs but were forced to fight the war with Ukraine.
As per the reports, Taking to X he said, “Good to meet Russian FM Sergey Lavrov in Astana today. Wide-ranging conversation on our bilateral partnership and contemporary issues. Noted the progress in many areas since our last meeting in December 2023.” He said he also raised India’s strong concern over Indian nationals who are currently in the war zone. “Pressed for their safe and expeditious return,” he added. He also discussed the global strategic landscape and exchanged assessments and views. Earlier on Tuesday, Jaishankar met his Kazakh counterpart Murat Nurtleu and the two leaders exchanged views on various issues, including India’s increasing engagement with Central Asia.
