Jammu-Srinagar NH-44 remain closed for vehicular traffic for 4th consecutive day

According to Media Sources, In Jammu and Kashmir, the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) shall remain closed for vehicular traffic for the fourth consecutive day today due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Udhampur-Ramban belt. Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports that due to the closure of the National Highway, over 600 vehicles are stranded at various places enroute. The 270 km long stretch, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was blocked by multiple landslides at several places between Jakheni and Chenani in Udhampur district. As per traffic police, no vehicular movement will be allowed from Nagrota in Jammu towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, and Srinagar. The commuters belonging to Katra and Udhampur towns are requested to keep their photo ID cards to prove their identity so that their movement can be facilitated smoothly.

As Per Media Sources, However, men and machines of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working on war footing to clear the highway of blockades, which occurred on Tuesday following heavy rains and flash floods. The Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag highway is also closed for vehicular movement. However, the movement of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) has be allowed on the historic Mughal Road connecting twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region with the Shopian district of Kashmir region, subject to fair weather and good road condition, after getting a green signal from road maintenance agencies. These vehicles are allowed from Behramgala in Poonch and Herpora in Shopian between 7 AM and 6 PM. Meanwhile, the Directorate of School Education Jammu has ordered the closure of all government and private schools across the Jammu division till August 30 in view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and flood risk. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging in school premises, flooding in low-lying areas, risks of landslides and mudslides, and damage to road infrastructure. These disruptions have made physical attendance unsafe. Heads of all educational institutions have been advised to explore the feasibility of online classes for students of classes 9 to 12, wherever possible and thorough sanitation and safety inspections before the reopening of schools and resumption of physical classes. Parents and students have been asked to remain in touch with official communication channels for further updates.
