Delhi: According to the media sources, on Uttarakashi tunnel rescue, DG NDRF, Atul Karwal said, “NDRF rescuers had reached the spot immediately after the disaster and from that stage onwards, we were anticipating what are the situations which we might have to encounter. Initially, a horizontal tunnel was planned and eventually that succeeded also but in between when there were a lot of obstacles in concluding that several other options were opened up – one of which was a vertical tunnel from the top of the mountain which could be about 90 meters deep. In that case, the hole for extricating the workers was only going to be about 22 inches wide. When we realised that this may not succeed, we planned in great detail about taking people out vertically from a 90-metre-deep hole. That also was something which we had prepared ourselves for.”

DG NDRF, Karwal also said, “NDRF and SDRF were in great sync…The PMO was involved from the very beginning. The officers of PMO were there. That kind of interest being taken by the highest office ensured that everybody did their task in a seamless manner.”
