According to media sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today addressed the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana in the capital, Accra. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said, the relationship between India and Ghana knows no bounds, noting the friendship between the two nations is sweeter than Ghana’s famous “Sugar Loaf Pineapple”.
Speaking on democracy, Prime Minister Modi described India as the mother of democracy, stressing the importance of openness and dialogue in a democratic setup. He highlighted India’s vast diversity as a strength of its democratic fabric. He said, for Indiana, a democracy is not just a system, it is a part of our fundamental values. He hailed the West African nation for its enduring commitment to democracy, dignity, and resilience, calling it a “beacon of inspiration” for the African continent.
During his visit, PM Modi was conferred with “The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, country’s highest civilian honour, by President John Mahama. Addressing Ghana’s Parliament, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the African nation on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians and noted the emotional connection to the award. He thanked Ghana’s President for the honour and called it a matter of immense pride. He said he dedicates the award to the youth of both countries as well as to the enduring friendship and shared values between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, Mr Modi paid tribute to Ghana’s founding President and a revered leader of the African independence movement, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, at Nkrumah Memorial Park in the capital Accra. He was accompanied by Ghana’s Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
In the first leg of his two-day visit to the West African Nation, Mr Modi interacted with the Indian diaspora in Ghana’s capital, Accra, receiving a warm welcome from the members of the community. During the visit, the Prime Minister held wide-ranging talks with the President of Ghana, John Mahama, at the Jubilee House presidential complex, which was built with Indian assistance. Both leaders reviewed the strong partnership and discussed further avenues to enhance it through economic, energy, and defence collaboration. During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership.
Following the talks, India and Ghana exchanged four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering Culture, Standards, Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine, and the establishment of a Joint Commission Mechanism to enhance engagement between the two countries’ Foreign Ministries. India offered cooperation in the development of a vaccine hub in Ghana for the West African region, digital public infrastructure and skill development.
In a social media post, Prime Minister Modi said, India and Ghana see immense scope in working closely in areas such as critical minerals, defence, maritime security and energy. Enhancing cultural linkages was also talked about. He described his talks with President Mahama as extremely fruitful. Mr Modi had reached the Ghanaian capital, Accra, yesterday.
