According to media sources, After a devastating cloudburst triggered a flood yesterday in Kheerganga river, Dharali, located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, relief and rescue operations are ongoing at a war footing. The Army, NDRF, SDRF, District Administration, and other concerned agencies are actively involved in rescue and relief efforts. Over 130 people have been safely evacuated so far. Relief camps have been set up with arrangements for food, water, medicine, and shelter.
Under the leadership of Colonel Harshvardhan, Commanding Officer of the 14th Rajputana Rifles, approximately 150 soldiers are engaged in relief operations in the affected area. Additionally, three SDRF teams are on-site, and around 70 to 80 people have been relocated to safer areas in Gangotri.
SDRF Commander Arpan Yaduvanshi informed that additional teams equipped with advanced gear and dog squads are en route to the disaster site. However, continuous heavy rainfall and sudden flooding have obstructed several routes, making access to the affected area difficult.
To strengthen relief efforts, two Inspectors General, three Superintendents of Police, 11 Deputy SPs, and nearly 300 police personnel have been deployed. Special units of the PAC and the Indian Reserve Battalion- IRB are also assisting in relief work. The Public Works Department and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are focused on clearing the blocked roads.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed the situation at the Dehradun Disaster Operations Center last night. He directed all relief agencies to work in coordination, ensure the immediate evacuation of affected people, and provide all necessary assistance. Mr Dhami also ordered the closure of all educational and non-emergency institutions in the affected area, restoration of communication and power lines, and arrangements for accommodation, food, and medicines in hotels and homestays.Our correspondent reports that hospitals in the affected region have been placed on alert to strengthen healthcare facilities.
Kumar, three teams of specialist doctors have been dispatched to Uttarkashi. Additional beds have been reserved at Harsil PHC, Bhatwari PHC, District Hospital Uttarkashi, AIIMS Rishikesh, and Doon Hospital. The 108 ambulance service has been placed on high alert, and all doctors’ leaves have been canceled with immediate effect. To expedite relief efforts, MI-17 and Chinook helicopters from the Army, along with helicopters from UCADA, have been requested. Aerial support will commence once weather conditions improve.
Meanwhile, rainfall continues across various parts of the state for the third consecutive day. The Meteorological Department has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rain in different regions. In Rudraprayag, the Kedarnath Yatra has been temporarily halted for safety reasons. Schools and Anganwadi centers from Classes 1 to 12 in Almora, Pithoragarh, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Champawat, Pauri, and Udham Singh Nagar have been closed for the day.
