According to media sources, India’s renewable energy sector achieved the highest-ever capacity addition in the last financial year, installing 25 gigawatts by the end of March. New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said this today while addressing a press conference in New Delhi. He said that the sector witnessed an increase of almost 35 percent in the last financial year compared to 18.57 gigawatts achieved in the financial year 2023-24. The Minister highlighted that the country’s journey in renewable energy was led by solar, which soared from 15 to nearly 21 gigawatts in the last financial year, recording an impressive growth of around 38 percent. Mr. Joshi asserted that a big step is being taken to decarbonize the transportation sector and domestic households by mandating the introduction of BioCNG for the blending of compressed biogas with compressed natural gas for transportation and piped natural gas for households. He added that India’s solar PV cell manufacturing capacity also increased nearly three times, from 9 gigawatts in March 2024 to around 25 gigawatts in March this year.
He mentioned that the PM KUSUM Scheme has also seen good progress both in terms of physical and financial aspects in the last financial year. Mr. Joshi further emphasized that since the launch of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 1.1 lakh households have benefited, and nearly 7 lakh employments were also generated in the previous financial year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the growth of India’s renewable energy sector. Responding to a social media post of Mr. Parlhad Joshi, Mr. Modi called the achievements of the renewable energy sector a great development. The Prime Minister stated that these achievements illustrate the commitment of the citizens of the country towards sustainability.
