President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron twitted “The forest is absolutely critical in the fight against global warming and against the loss of biodiversity. But in 2022 alone, four million hectares have disappeared from primary tropical forests.
There is an urgent need to stop deforestation. Many commitments have already been made: at the COP in Glasgow in 2021, we committed to stop deforestation by 2030, in Montreal in 2022, to save 30% of land and seas.
We must now translate these ambitions into very concrete terms. How ? By fighting against the scourges of deforestation, pollution and illegal gold panning, while defending the populations who live in the forest and from the forest.
This is why I thank Brazil and President Lula for the organization in Belem today of an important summit against deforestation in the Amazon, bringing together the States of the region and particularly committed partners, including France . We were indeed the driving force behind the European Union’s historic decision to no longer contribute to imported deforestation.
During my travels in recent months, in Libreville at the gates of the Congo forest basin, or in Papua New Guinea where primary forest occupies most of the territory, I have been able to promote a model: reconciling the preservation of nature and economic development by remunerating the services provided by forest states and their populations to the rest of the world.
Also, the first partnerships are emerging between forest states and their international partners, so that the latter contribute to financing the actions to protect and restore the primary forests that we all need to lead the fight against climate change. This model is the one we are wearing this week in Belem and which will be one of our priorities at COP 28 at the end of the year. So until then, let’s join forces to protect vital reserves of carbon and biodiversity, for the benefit of forest countries, their populations and the whole world.”
