Train Accidents reduced from 135 in 2014-15 to 40 in 2023-24: Centre

According to media sources, The Centre today said due to various safety measures taken over the years by the government, consequential Train Accidents have reduced from 135 in 2014-15 to 40 in 2023-24.

In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that the consequential train accidents during the period of 2004-14 was 1711 with a stand average of 171 accidents per annum, which has declined to 678 during the period 2014-24. Mr Vaishnaw said that during the rule of NDA in the period 2014-24, the figure of accidents reduced significantly and it was posted to average 68 accidents per annum. He added that in comparison to the UPA rule, a 60 percent reduction was registered in train accidents during the NDA rule.

The Union Minister also informed that another important index showing improved safety in train operations has been also registered in terms of Accidents Per Million Train Kilometer ( APMTKM ) which has reduced from 0.11 in 2014-15 to 0.03 in 2023-24. He said this entails an improvement of 73 per cent during the period of the NDA regime.
